Repeatable One-Side and Whole-Sofa Drop Testing
The DR-J502 Sofa Drop Test Machine helps furniture manufacturers and laboratories reproduce controlled drop events associated with lifting, handling and transport. Independent left and right pneumatic lifting cylinders allow one side of a sofa—or the complete specimen—to be raised to a programmed height and released for repeatable impact evaluation.
Two Drop Modes
Run an independent one-side drop to concentrate impact at a selected end, or synchronize both cylinders for a whole-sofa lift and release.
Large Specimen Capacity
Accommodates sofas up to 2200 × 1000 × 950 mm and 150 kg within a 2200 × 1300 mm effective test area.
Programmable Test Control
Set lift height and cycle count from the LCD touchscreen, then monitor the digital height and completed cycles during the test.

1. What the DR-J502 Evaluates
Damage caused by handling is often discovered after a sofa has left the production line. A sudden drop at one end can loosen a leg bracket, crack a timber rail, deform a metal joint or shift an internal connection even when the upholstery still appears intact. Manual drop checks are difficult to reproduce and create unnecessary lifting risks for operators.
The DR-J502 controls the lift height, side selection and number of drops so the same procedure can be repeated across prototypes, supplier samples or production batches. After each programmed sequence, the operator can inspect the frame, legs, joints, fasteners, mechanisms and upholstery for damage defined in the approved test plan.
This machine evaluates the structural response of a sofa or similar large seating specimen to a controlled drop. It is not a seat-impact machine that drops a test bag onto the cushion, and it does not by itself reproduce every vibration, compression and shock hazard in a complete packaged-product distribution test.
2. One-Side and Whole-Sofa Drop Modes
Independent One-Side Drop
One pneumatic cylinder lifts the selected side while the opposite side remains in the prescribed position. Electromagnetic release allows the raised end to fall freely onto the test surface. This mode is useful for concentrating the impact at one end and comparing left/right structural response.
Synchronized Whole-Sofa Drop
The two cylinders lift the specimen together to the programmed height and release it as a complete unit. Synchronization, attachment points and specimen balance must be confirmed for the sofa geometry and approved procedure.

3. Typical Test Workflow
1. Define the Procedure
Confirm whether the specimen is packaged or unpackaged, identify the required side or orientation, and record the standard edition or internal QC method.
2. Inspect and Measure
Record the sofa dimensions, mass and pre-existing condition. Mark the structural joints and components that must be checked after testing.
3. Position the Specimen
Place the sofa inside the effective test area and connect the approved lifting interfaces without adding restraints that mask the intended impact response.
4. Program the Test
Select one-side or synchronized lift, enter a 75–300 mm height and set the required number of cycles from 0 to 32,000.
5. Run and Monitor
Verify the digital height, clear the active test area and start the pneumatic lift/electromagnetic release sequence. Stop the machine if abnormal movement occurs.
6. Inspect and Report
Document the completed cycles, settings, failure cycle, visible damage, loosened joints, functional changes and any deviation from the approved procedure.

Before the machine enters service, define the checks for lift-height indication, cycle counting, release operation and any measurement functions used by the approved procedure. The furniture testing equipment calibration checklist explains how to separate daily checks, intermediate verification, calibration and maintenance records.
5. Test References and Method Boundaries
The DR-J502 can be configured around applicable sofa and seating evaluation procedures referenced by QB/T 1952.1, GB/T 10357.3, EN 1728 or relevant BS 4875 requirements when the specimen type, edition and exact clause are confirmed. These documents do not all define an identical test, and some are product requirements while others describe test methods or performance levels.
For a packaged sofa distribution program, provide the complete packaging procedure separately. A free-drop or handling-impact sequence for a complete shipping package may require different orientations, impact surfaces, instrumentation or additional vibration and compression equipment.
6. What to Provide Before Quotation
| Required Information | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Sofa construction and intended market | Distinguishes residential, contract and other seating requirements. |
| Packaged or unpackaged specimen | Determines whether the objective is structural evaluation, packaging evaluation or both. |
| Maximum dimensions and mass | Confirms clearance, lifting points and capacity within the 150 kg limit. |
| Standard, edition and clause | Prevents the wrong drop orientation, height or cycle program from being supplied. |
| Required drop modes | Confirms independent left/right use and synchronized lifting requirements. |
| Acceptance criteria | Defines what damage, deformation, loosening or loss of function constitutes failure. |
| Site electrical and compressed air | Confirms compatibility with AC 220 V and the required air supply. |
| Safety and reporting requirements | Identifies any site-specific guarding, interlock or documentation needs. |
7. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DR-J502 sofa drop test machine used for?
It raises and releases one side or the complete sofa from a controlled height so manufacturers can inspect the frame, legs, joints, fasteners and mechanisms for handling-related impact damage.
Can the left and right sides be tested independently?
Yes. The two pneumatic lifting cylinders are independently controlled, allowing a selected side to be lifted and released. The required orientation and number of drops should be defined in the approved test method.
Can the DR-J502 lift an entire sofa?
It supports synchronized whole-sofa lifting for specimens within the confirmed 2200 × 1000 × 950 mm envelope and 150 kg capacity. Lifting interfaces and specimen balance must be reviewed before testing.
Is this the same as a sofa fatigue tester?
No. The DR-J501 Sofa Fatigue Tester repeatedly loads the seat and back to simulate use, while the DR-J502 focuses on controlled drop impacts associated with lifting and handling.
Can it test packaged furniture to ISTA or ASTM shipping procedures?
Do not assume that automatically. Packaged-product procedures may require specific orientations, impact surfaces and additional conditioning, vibration or compression tests. Send the complete procedure so the required equipment can be reviewed.
What information is needed for a technical proposal?
Provide the specimen condition, dimensions, mass, standard and edition, test clause, drop orientation, height, cycles, acceptance criteria and available utilities.
