Q: Do I need separate equipment for each furniture testing standard (BIFMA, EN, ASTM)?
A: In most cases, no — a single well-designed test platform can serve multiple standards. The DR-J501 and DR-J601 are built with this multi-standard flexibility in mind. The mechanical architecture — load frame, actuator, load cell, fixturing — remains constant. What changes between standards is the test recipe: applied force values, cycle counts, loading pad geometry, hold times, and pass/fail criteria. These are all software-configurable parameters stored as named test programs on the machine’s PLC.
For example, the DR-J501 sofa/chair durability tester can run EN 12520 domestic seating tests, BIFMA X5.4 lounge seating tests, and Chinese GB/T 10357.3 chair tests — all on the same hardware, switched via the touchscreen in under a minute.
That said, there are limits:
- Loading pads differ: BIFMA, EN, and ASTM sometimes specify different loading pad diameters and shapes. We supply a set of standard-compliant interchangeable pads with each machine.
- Some standards require unique test rigs: ASTM F1566 (Cornell mattress test) uses a specific 240-lb hexagonal roller not found in EN 1957. If you need both, the DR-J503 can accommodate different roller attachments, but you’ll need both roller assemblies.
- Fixture compatibility: Chair base fixtures for BIFMA X5.1 swivel testing differ from those for EN 1335. We include the fixtures for your primary standard and offer additional fixture kits as options.
