A: BIFMA X5.1-2017 (R2022) defines 20 distinct tests covering safety, strength, and durability for general-purpose office chairs. Here are the key ones every manufacturer should know:
Durability/Cyclic Tests (most equipment-intensive):
- Swivel test (Section 8): 120,000 rotational cycles under load — tests the swivel mechanism’s long-term integrity.
- Tilt mechanism test (Section 9): 300,000 tilt cycles — the highest cycle count in the standard, targeting the reclining mechanism.
- Seating durability (Section 10): 100,000 impact cycles at the seat center — simulates repeated sitting.
- Front corner load-ease (Section 10.4): 40,000 off-center cycles — tests edge loading when users lean to one side.
- Backrest durability Type I (Section 14): 120,000 cycles — for tilting chairs where the backrest moves with the seat.
- Backrest durability Type II/III (Section 15): 120,000 cycles — for fixed-seat chairs with tilting or fixed backrests.
