A buyer asking for “EN 1730 testing” may be referring to how a table is tested, while your laboratory still needs to establish which product requirements apply. EN 1730, EN 12521 and EN 15372 have different roles. Identifying that role before ordering equipment helps avoid an incomplete test programme or a fixture package intended for the wrong product.
1. Compare the Three Standards by Role
EN 1730:2012 — methods
Explains methods for evaluating structural stability, strength and durability of tables and desks. It does not itself set the end-use requirements for every table.
EN 12521:2023 — domestic tables
Addresses safety, strength and durability requirements for adult-use domestic tables, including relevant glass constructions. Check exclusions and the selected product configuration.
EN 15372:2023 — non-domestic tables
Addresses requirements for non-domestic tables within its scope. The term “non-domestic” does not make it applicable to every table used outside a home.
The editions above are the published versions identified in the official catalogues checked on 13 October 2026. An EN 12521 amendment identified as EN 12521:2023/prA1:2026 is a draft. A catalogue label such as “current” on a draft entry does not turn the proposal into a published replacement. Confirm the controlled edition required by the purchaser and laboratory.
2. EN 1730: The Test-Method Layer
EN 1730 supplies structural methods that can be relevant to different table uses and designs. The selected product requirement or buyer specification determines the applicable actions, performance criteria and any referenced procedural details. Writing “EN 1730 passed” without identifying the selected tests and requirements leaves important information unstated.
The method scope includes tables and desks, but excludes changing units and does not provide ageing, degradation or electrical-function assessment. Strength and durability of storage features need their own scope review. A structural testing machine therefore cannot establish every safety characteristic of an assembled desk or table.
In an equipment enquiry, state both the product requirement and the selected test method. For example, an adult-use domestic table may need an EN 12521 programme using relevant EN 1730 methods plus any additional applicable requirements. Verify the exact references in your controlled documents before specifying loads and fixtures.

3. EN 12521: Check the Domestic Table Scope
Begin with how the table is intended to be used. A domestic dining or occasional table for adults is a scope candidate for EN 12521. Material alone does not determine the standard: glass construction can be included, while product use and design still need review.
The published scope excludes office tables and desks, non-domestic tables, educational tables, outdoor tables and trestle tables. It also does not provide electrical-safety or ageing requirements. Assessment of included storage is limited by the scope, with stability treated separately from other storage performance.
Record whether the table extends, folds or has other configurations. Select the required test arrangements from the applicable programme; do not assume that one unextended setup establishes the performance of every configuration.
4. EN 15372: Non-Domestic Does Not Mean Every Commercial Table
A table intended for a non-domestic setting can be a candidate for EN 15372, but the exact use and construction must fit the scope. The document has exclusions for office work tables/desks, educational tables, relevant workbenches and outdoor tables. It also excludes certain constructions with an unattached top as described in its scope.
For a restaurant or similar furnishing project, establish the product use and the required test severity with the purchaser or laboratory. Use the controlled standard for the applicable level and test programme. This guide does not replace those choices with a single generic load or cycle count.
Domestic dining table
Review EN 12521, confirm adult domestic use, then identify the required structural and safety actions.
Non-domestic furnishing table
Review EN 15372 and its exclusions. Agree the applicable programme and severity for the intended use.
Office work desk
Review the relevant EN 527 requirements. Do not select EN 15372 merely because the desk is used commercially.
5. Convert the Standard into an Equipment Requirement
Once product scope is settled, map every selected action to a loading arrangement, fixture and measurement. The Table and Desk Testing Equipment category provides equipment directions; the controlled procedure establishes how each action must be performed.
- Structural static loading: identify contact points, directions, supports, target loads and observations.
- Durability loading: identify the required repeated sequence, specimen configurations and inspections.
- Stability: identify the table setup, loading positions, restraints and tipping assessment.
- Additional actions: identify any impact, entrapment, mechanism or other requirement needing separate apparatus.
- Measurements: specify the quantities, ranges and records needed for the selected programme.
Review the DR-J701 Table Static Load Tester for structural-loading tasks. Review the DR-J702 Table Stability Tester for focused tipping-stability arrangements. Confirm any additional capability in the proposed configuration rather than inferring it from the model name.

A combined frame may cover several agreed actions with suitable accessories. A dedicated station may suit a particular action or workload. The number of frames is not the measure of standard coverage: the test-to-fixture matrix, specimen clearance, control and measurement functions are what need verification.
6. Avoid Four Common Specification Errors
Quoting only EN 1730
Add the applicable product requirements and selected tests so the laboratory knows the criteria it is evaluating.
Using one load for every table
Loads, locations, configurations and sequences depend on the selected programme. Machine maximum capacity is a separate specification.
Treating office desks as generic non-domestic tables
Check the exclusions and relevant EN 527 scope before assigning an EN 15372 programme.
Calling a draft the latest published standard
Record the publication status, edition and amendment basis. Keep proposals separate from adopted requirements.
7. Send a Complete Table Test Enquiry
- Intended use: domestic, non-domestic, office, outdoor, educational or another stated use.
- Product drawings, dimensions, mass and base/support geometry.
- Materials, extension leaves, folding features, height adjustments and attached accessories.
- Required standard edition, selected actions and buyer specification.
- Applicable performance or severity requirements agreed with the laboratory.
- Needed measurement records, sample volume and installation utilities.
If a product sits near a scope boundary, explain its intended use instead of assigning a standard from its marketing name. The supplier and laboratory can then identify the remaining decisions before the equipment configuration is approved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EN 1730 enough to specify pass/fail?
Its official scope provides test methods without end-use requirements. Identify the applicable product standard or agreed criteria.
Are EN 12521 and EN 15372 interchangeable?
No. They serve different intended-use scopes and include exclusions that matter to the selected product.
Does one EN-marked machine cover the entire programme?
Not automatically. Verify each selected action, fixture and measurement, including any additional apparatus required.
Does this structural programme cover electrical safety?
No blanket conclusion is justified. Electrical functions and other features require their own applicable assessment.
